Despite a reputation for attracting retirees, Maine didn’t get a single mention in U.S. News & World Report’s “250 Best Places to Retire in the U.S. in 2027” list.

It’s at least the second year in a row that Maine hasn’t made the list.

The recommendations were released Tuesday, and Texas and Florida cleaned up with 44 and 42 entries, respectively, followed by Michigan with 20, Indiana with 12, North Carolina and Georgia with nine apiece, and West Virginia with eight.

Numerous states appeared five times or more, but none of those were in the Northeast.

Just one New England municipality made the list, the Boston suburb of Newton, Massachusetts, which has held a spot since at least the 2025 list.

The list was created by applying demographic and geographic data to six categories that were weighted based on a public survey of 3,500 people, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Those categories, listed from most to least weighted, were: quality of life (including crime, weather temperateness, risks of extreme weather events, culture, air quality and walkability), value (cost), health care quality, retiree taxes, senior population/migration, and job market (based on Americans having “a variety of views on what it means to be retired”).
