I’m a Maine parent. Kindness matters. Social skills matter. They do not replace reading, writing, and math. My child only gets one chance.
The Maine Department of Education told us to focus on social emotional learning. Now it says back to basics. Why were academics seemingly placed in the backseat? I lead the effort to shape my child’s character. I need public schools to take the lead in literacy and math.
My child only gets one chance. I want the next governor to commit to literacy-based reform. And, districts must publish the program, and parents must be notified. I also support education tax credits so the families that need it the most have more resources.
Academics must come first.
