What is one new policy that the state should embrace to make housing easier to build and afford?
We face significant housing challenges, and no one-size-fits-all solution exists. The state has made progress by encouraging inclusionary zoning and offering tax credits and incentives for affordable housing development. However, we need a more strategic and coordinated approach that aligns state and local efforts with input from industry groups, advocates, and community leaders. Transparency and accountability are crucial. A dedicated body to oversee and track housing initiatives would ensure efficient resource use, minimize development barriers, and keep the public informed, addressing both supply and affordability issues.
Transmission lines, solar incentives and offshore wind development have been controversial over the past several years. What steps should Maine take to meet growing demand for electricity?
Maine families and businesses deserve reliable, affordable power. No one should have to choose between paying their electric bill or buying groceries. To meet growing demand, Maine should prioritize clean energy, reducing dependence on costly fossil fuels while ensuring price stability and a healthier environment.
Solar and wind energy can create jobs and lower long-term costs but must be implemented responsibly, with proper review and public input. Grid updates and smart technology are essential for handling renewable energy, alongside energy storage solutions like large-scale batteries. Efficiency measures, such as energy-saving appliances and better insulation, can reduce demand. Utilities must be held accountable with incentives and penalties to ensure affordability and reliability
Should the state make changes to its tax laws? If so, outline your priorities.
Yes, the state should make changes to its tax laws to better support the working people of Maine. We need to move toward a fairer tax structure that provides meaningful relief for working families and older residents on fixed incomes. It’s essential to protect recent efforts like the refundable Maine Child Tax Credit of $300, the increase in the annual income tax pension deduction to align with the maximum Social Security benefit, and the Property Tax Fairness Credit for Mainers aged 65 and older.
My priorities include expanding tax credits to incentivize the development of affordable housing, increasing the Maine student loan tax credit, and introducing tax credits for small businesses that create jobs right here in Maine.
We are closing in on the one-year anniversary of the Lewiston mass shooting. Are further legislative responses required around guns, mental health, supporting victims and families or other policy areas?
The Lewiston mass shooting was a devastating tragedy that highlighted critical gaps in our approach to gun violence prevention, mental health care, and victim support. As we reflect on this tragedy, we must balance protecting Second Amendment rights with effective measures that reduce violence. It is essential to continue investing in Maine’s behavioral health care and mental health services to ensure everyone can access the support they need.
The Legislature has taken important steps, including strengthening the “yellow flag” law, expanding background checks, establishing a 72-hour waiting period for firearm purchases, and funding crisis intervention services. We must build on these efforts to create safer communities and provide ongoing support for victims and their families.
Describe a unique attribute or area of focus that you will bring to the Legislature.
One unique attribute I bring to the Legislature is my experience in human services and workforce development, especially regarding the mental health services system. I am deeply concerned about its current state; agencies struggle to recruit and retain qualified professionals, leading to an overworked and underpaid workforce. This situation exacerbates the struggles of families we serve, many of whom face generations of unhealed trauma. To create lasting change, we must develop comprehensive strategies that support both our workforce and the families relying on these essential services. I am committed to advocating for policies that invest in mental health services, ensuring our agencies have the necessary resources to break this cycle and foster a healthier future for the next generation.
