RAYMOND ‘JACK’ CLARKE SCARBOROUGH – Raymond “Jack” Clarke, 82, passed away Aug. 27, 2008, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness at a local hospital. Jack was born in Stonington, the son of Milo B. and Beulah M. Clarke. He attended Stonington and Ellsworth schools, and a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Class of 1943 and a 1950 graduate of Bowdoin College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Jack excelled in high school and college baseball, and was nominated as All-State Baseball Player at Bowdoin College. He was a member of three state series championship teams and was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and served in the South Pacific Theater-Philippines from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of VFW Post No. 832 and Portland Eagles Club. Jack taught in South Portland schools, 1951-1958. He was principal of Lincoln School, 1952-1954; and South Portland Elementary principal and area supervisor, 1954-1958. He later was employed by Scott, Foresonan & Co., textbook publishers, 1958-1978. He was self-employed from 1980 to 1982, and worked in sales for Palmer Spring Co., 1982-1987. He was a member of Educational Salesman’s Association of New England, served on the executive board, and was president of Maine Education Salesman’s Association. Jack shared his love and enthusiasm for baseball by becoming a coach for South Portland Little League, 1951-1960; and by coaching the South Portland Morrill Post Legion to 76 wins in three years, 1970-1974. He was awarded the Kenneth M. Sills Award as Little League Coach of the Year. In 1989 he was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. Jack was a member of the South Portland Recreation Board of Directors and South Portland School Board. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, golf and watching his beloved Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Graves Clarke in 2007. Surviving are his three children, Suzanne Clarke Greenleaf and husband, Stephen, of Pinehurst, N.C., Thomas Clarke and wife, Jill, of South Portland and Robert Clarke and wife, Kathleen, of Falmouth; grandchildren, Nathan Geyerhahn and wife, Dana, Matthew Greenleaf, Hannah Clarke, Lauren Clarke, Melissa Clarke Vasconcelos and husband, Tavo and Jennifer Clarke Underwood and husband, Michael; and great-granddaughters, Gabriela and Lydia Vasconcelos and Anna Geyerhahn. Visiting hours will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland, where a memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Burial will be at Brooklawn Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
