NEWRY – Sylvia B. Wight died Aug. 31, 2008, at Stillwater Healthcare, Bangor. She was born Jan. 11, 1921, in Upton, daughter of Lila (McLeod) and Banamon Barnett. She attended school in Upton and received a GED from Telstar in 1983. On June 6, 1943, she married Willard A. Wight in Rumford. She and her family lived in Old Town for 20 years. She was a member of Federated Church of Stillwater, where she taught Sunday school. She and her husband returned to Newry to care for his parents on their family farm. Always a wonderful homemaker, she welcomed anyone who stopped by with fresh-baked cookies and friendly conversation. Sylvia was a member of Bethel Historical Society and Newry Community Church, where she participated in the Mother’s Club and Ladies Circle. As a member of Windy Valley Snowmobile Club, she enjoyed snowmobiling with her husband and spent countless hours accompanying him to MSA meetings across the state. She and her husband were proud members of the American Tree Farm System for more than 30 years. She is survived by two sons, Stephen W. Wight and his wife, Marlene, of Old Town, and David L. Wight and his wife, Anne, of Greenbush; one daughter, Gretchen Strauss and her husband, William, of Waterford; six grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Rachael, Stephanie, Julie and Melissa; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Malcolm Barnett and his wife, Alda, of Errol, N.H.; one sister, Phyllis Young and her companion, Kenny Waugh, of Byron; and brother-in-law, Owen Wight of Newry. Her husband of 62 years, Bill; sisters, Muriel McKercher, Katherine Wight and Pearl Weston; and brothers, James and Lee Barnett, predeceased her. Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, at Greenleaf Funeral Home, 37 Vernon St., Bethel, where memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment will be at Head of Tide Cemetery, Newry.
