HOWLAND – Herbert Andrew Vanadestine died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at a Bangor hospital after a brief illness. He was born May 9, 1926, in Bangor, to James and Mary (Morgan) Vanadestine. Herb was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in both operations. He retired from Great Northern Paper Co., after 32 years. He worked in various security positions locally after retirement. After his family, Herb’s greatest love was golf. He was an avid golfer, whose skills were known throughout Eastern Maine. He also played Minor League Baseball, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with family. He was a member of St. Leo’s Parish of Howland and was a member of American Legion Post No. 97. Herb is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Emily (Theriault) Vanadestine; daughter Debbie Davis and husband, Terry; son, Andy and wife, Betsy; daughter, Beth Thomas and husband, Ted; daughter, Susanne Gray and husband, Marty; daughter, Julie Foster and husband, Jim; son, Michael and wife, Jodi; two sisters, Mildred and Peggy; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Herb was predeceased by his sister, Josephine; brothers, James, John, Thomas and Edward; and special great-grand-daughter, Haley Clark. Herb’s family wishes to thank the very special personnel of St. Joseph Hospital and the B-Unit at the Maine Veterans’ Home for their care and kindness during Herb’s illness. Visiting hours for family only will be held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Interment will be in the spring, when his son, Michael, has returned from Iraq.
