ORONO, Maine – A University of Maine graduate student has won runner-up honors in an international conservation and nature photography competition for his photograph of a bird.
Dane Wojicki of Amherst, N.H., was honored in the student category of the International Conservation Photogra-phy Awards’ 2008 competition.
There were more than 1,000 entries to the biennial competition. Wojcicki was one of two student award winners this year.
Wojcicki is working toward a Master of Arts degree in new media with a focus on documentary photography and videography of natural history and science. He took the photograph of a bird, a juvenile dunlin, while on a UMaine phytoplankton research cruise off the coast of Iceland.
The competition includes an online exhibit, a six-week show at the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, and publication in a photography magazine.
