COL. ALYCE J. BENN HOULTON and WOBURN, Mass. – Col. Alyce J. Benn, U.S. Army Nurse Corps, retired, 91, passed away Sept. 3, 2008, at her home in Woburn, Mass. She was born and raised in Houlton, the daughter of Dr. Chauncey and Pearl (Small) Benn. Alyce was a graduate of Houlton High School and Lawrence Memorial School of Nursing, New London, Conn. During World War II, Colonel Benn served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, and was stationed in Honolulu and Saipan in the Western Pacific. After her active duty, she went on to serve for 33 years as a nurse in the Army Reserves. She was also a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, retiring after 33 years. Alyce is survived by one brother, Paul D. Benn of Phoenix; one sister, Geraldine Duplichen of Houlton; many nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Arthur Myers officiating. A service of Dunn Funeral Home.
