BANGOR – Albert G. Carlson Sr. died peacefully Sept. 12, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Feb. 16, 1915, in Somerville, Mass., one of 12 siblings to Carl and Maria (Suderland) Carlson. Albert graduated from Somerville High School, where he demonstrated a keen competitive spirit as an athlete. He was part of that generation that survived the depression and World War II with integrity. He was in his earlier years a craftsman and was cited by the Department of the Navy for his service at the Boston Navy Yard during the war years. As a graduate of the “school of hard knocks,” he advanced himself and became a safety engineer for an insurance company for many years, putting his knowledge of construction to work in the corporate world. However, his most important accomplishment was his marriage to Gertrude A. Marvin. They were married Dec. 7, 1941, and had two sons. He was proud of his children and was a sure and steady man with solid core values of hard work, honesty, dependability and self-reliance. His hallmark, however, was his devotion to his wife. He was her caregiver for many years and it was a joy to see his tenaciousness to provide for her daily comfort. He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude; his parents and other siblings. Surviving are his sons, Albert G. Carlson Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Massachusetts and Robert T. Carlson and his wife, Elaine, of Bangor; four grandchildren, Robin Carlson-Ouellette and her husband, David, of New Hampshire, Kristen Carlson-Ellis of Massachusetts, Cheryl Iodice and her husband, Joe, of Massachusetts and Jerri P. Barnett of Dover; seven great-grandchildren, Sam, Tess, Rebecca, McKenzie, Maggie, Jason and Joe; six great-great-grand-children, Alyssa, Katie, Jason, Jacob, Mikayla and Courtney. The family expresses its thankfulness to Penobscot Community Health Care, Dr. Barbara Vereault, Dr. Curt Dailey, the caregivers of Premier Home Care and the entire staff at St. Joseph Hospital. There will be a memorial service 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at East Orrington Congregational Church with the Rev. Carl A. Schreiber, senior pastor, officiating. Those who wish may make a gift to the Reverend Robert T. and V. Elaine Carlson Scholarship Fund, E.O.C.C., 38 Johnson Mill Road, Orrington, ME 04474 or to a charity of their choosing. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.BrookingsSmith.com
