FORT FAIRFIELD and PRESQUE ISLE – Albert J. Bernard, 89, died Nov. 27, 2006, at a local hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Joseph and Sophie (Lavoie) Bernard. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Presque Isle. Albert served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater and was in combat during the invasion of Normandy. Because of his service, he was awarded a Bronze Star, a Combat Infantry Badge and a Purple Heart. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1753 and the Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187 VFW, both of Fort Fairfield. Albert’s focus in life was to be a special dad and grandfather. Spending time with his family and attending the activities of his grandchildren gave him great joy. In addition to his parents, Albert was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. Surviving him is his wife, Merilda (Levesque) Bernard; four daughters and their spouses, Anne and Brian Blanchard of Fort Fairfield, Marcia and Bobby Kennedy of Buxton, Sue Bernard of South Portland and Jane and Paul Towle of Presque Isle; nine grandchildren, Jon, Brianna, Billi, Adam and Marci, Travis, Casey, Krista, Justin and Jacob; a brother, Rufus Bernard of Caribou; a sister, Doris Bernard of Fort Fairfield; a special friend, Henry Furtek of Presque Isle; several nieces, nephews and his loving family in Grand Falls. Relatives and friends may call 2:30-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Main Street, with the Rev. Raymond Morency, celebrant. A reception will be held after the service at the K of C’s building. A military committal service will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Caribou.
