ROCKLAND – Alberta E. Kimball, 84, longtime Rockland teacher and pianist, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport. Born Dec. 27, 1922, in Bridgewater, she was one of five children born to Fred L. and Sarah Boyer Kimball. She was educated in Bridgewater schools and was a 1940 graduate of Bridgewater Classical Academy. In 1943, she graduated from Aroostook State Normal School, Presque Isle and began teaching in Corinna in September of that year. In 1947, she accepted a teaching position in Rockland, where she had lived since that time. Since moving here as a young teacher, Miss Kimball immersed herself in the community and was involved throughout the years in numerous ways. As well as, teaching 26 years at Rockland’s South School, she also gave private piano lessons at her home. She served many years as pianist at the former Pratt Memorial Methodist Church, Rockland and more than 15 years as pianist at Peoples Methodist Church, South Thomaston, until her death. For a time, she also served in that capacity at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church, Rockland. Even after retiring, Miss Kimball often provided piano accompaniment for many school functions, and often played at the Methodist Conference Home. She regularly attended Bay Chamber Concerts and was planning on attending a concert at Rockland Congregational Church last Sunday. For several years she enjoyed working at the Toy Library, Rockland and worked there the Friday prior to her death. She was a longtime active member of the Nu Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary women’s teaching group; the Shakespeare Society; and Knox County Retired Teachers Association. Since her passing, many friends and family members have remembered Miss Kimball’s constant positive attitude, her love of a good laugh, her willingness to go at any time and her desire to help those in need. Miss Kimball was pre-deceased by her siblings, Ruth Kimball, Marjorie Kimball Brooks, John Kimball and Charles Kimball; a nephew, Gregg Kimball; and a niece, Edith Kimball Doane Lane. She is survived by two nieces, Sarah Brooks Blair of Dayton, Ohio, and Judith Kimball of Chatsworth, Calif.; two nephews, Charles Brooks and his wife, Helyn, of Watertown, Mass., and Fred L. Kimball and his wife, Evelyn, of Simi Valley, Calif.; her deceased niece’s husband, Gardner Lane of Scarborough; three great-nephews, John Doane of Barrington, N.H., David Doane of Waterville and Geoffrey Kimball of Simi Valley, Calif.; two great-nieces, Kristina Hergot and Diane Hergot, both of Encino, Calif., as well as, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, Gregg and Carlton Doane and Megan, Ryan, and Taylor Doane. A celebration of Miss Kimball’s life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at Peoples United Methodist Church, Chapel Street, South Thomaston with the Rev. Juni Shepardson officiating.
