ELLSWORTH – Alexander “Babs” J. Belanger, 89, died peacefully May 4, 2008, at his home. He was born Dec. 7, 1918, in St. Francis, the son of Joachim and Adele (Castonguay) Belanger. Babs attended school in St. Francis. He was a member of Civilian Conservation Corps. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served until 1946 with the rank of sergeant, of which he was the leader of the 30-caliber machine gun squad. He served in the American Theatre and Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He graduated from National School of Meat Cutting, Toledo, Ohio. Babs enjoyed cooking and gardening. He was very active in the VFW Post No. 109 until 2000. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He is survived by his daughter, Theresa Morrison and husband, Darwin “Bud” Morrison; and daughter, Susan Belanger; very special granddaughter, Ann Belanger Morrison; sister, Theresa Belanger, all of Ellsworth; many nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his best friend since 1923, Oscar Ouellette. He was predeceased by his wife, Nan in 1995; 16-year-old daughter, Ann in 1969; brothers, Helaire, Alfred, Antoine and Henry; and sisters, Clara, Mary Jane, Georgieanne and Bernadette. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Ells-worth.
