TREMONT – Alfred “Al” Clarence Butler, 53, died Aug. 21, 2006, at his residence after a seven year battle with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was born April 25, 1953, in Bar Harbor, the son of Clarence Watson and Beatrice Ina (Lunt) Butler. Al served in the U.S. Coast Guard as an E3 during the Vietnam War. He worked for the Cape May County Sheriffs Department in Cape May, N.J., for 14 years and made rank of lieutenant. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting in Milo. Tending his lobster traps aboard his boat “The Haz” was a big joy in his life. Al was a Celtics fan and he especially loved Larry Bird. He enjoyed all sports. Al coached football and played men’s softball. He also played base guitar in the Decade Band. Al was head of the Tremont Recreational Board and a member of the American Legion of Southwest Harbor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 16 years, Gloria R. Butler; four daughters, Alena Lee and her husband, Brian LaGasse, of Sullivan, Danette Marie and her husband, Mark DiDonato, of Cape May, N.J., Jean Ann and husband, Anthony Nicoletta, of Cape May, N.J., Nicole Cardano and Christopher Meister of Chicago; one brother, H. Richard Butler and his wife, Ruth (Pomroy), of West Tremont; two sisters, Judy Haslam of Bass Harbor and Janie Gagnon and her husband, James, of Hosston, La.; grandchildren, Stephanie, Joseph, Ryan, Lauren, Katrina, Brian, William, Owen and Gabrielle; and many nieces and nephews. Al was predeceased by his first wife, Kathryn Butler, the mother of Jean, Alena and Danette; two sisters, Joan Dow and Mary Gagnon; and one brother, Kenneth Butler. Services of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Jordan-Fernald Chapel, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Al’s memory may be made to the Tremont Recreation Fund, attention Recreation Board, P.O. Box 65, Bernard, ME 04612.
