PEMBROKE and BAILEYVILLE – Alice (Hilton) Mahar, 93, passed away March 3, 2008, at her son’s home, in East Machias. Alice was born June 3, 1914, in Pembroke, the daughter of Frank and Lora (Carter) Hilton. She graduated from Washington State Normal School, now University of Maine – Machias, in 1935 and taught for many years, including for 17 years in Baileyville from 1957 until her retirement in 1974. She loved her second-graders and they loved her, as well.Alice was predeceased in 1993, by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, John Russell Mahar; and a daughter, Lois, who died as an infant in 1943. She is survived by her son, James Mahar of New Orleans; her son, Jon Mahar and his wife, Mitsy, both of East Machias and Ishikawa, Japan; and two granddaughters, Amy and Yumi “Joanne” Mahar, also of East Machias and Japan. A brief memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 13, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. The family realizes that many of Mom’s remaining friends are up in years and that travel is difficult.
