SIDNEY – Alice Lula (Burrill) Grant, 96, died March 12, 2006, at her West River Road residence. She was born Dec. 16, 1909, in Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Carrie (Johnston) Burrill and Charles Leslie Burrill. The family moved to Maine in 1910. A graduate of Brewer High School in 1927 and of Washington State Normal School in 1933, Alice taught in Eaton, Bucksport, Monroe and Charlotte and substitute taught in Garfield, Ashland and Waterville. In addition, she tutored privately and in the Waterville public schools and taught Sunday school in Ashland. She was a member of NEA, MEA, the Maine Association of Retirees and the Knox County Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Sawtelle and husband, William, of Sidney; a son, Roger K. Grant and wife, Barbara, of Monroe, Conn.; three grandchildren, Catherine Sawtelle Rothrock, Jeannine Grant Petriel and Roger K. Grant Jr.; four great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews. An infant daughter, Anna May; a brother, Clarence J. Burrill; and a sister, Georgia Sproul predeceased her. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Wheeler Funeral Home of Oakland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Buford L. and Alice B.
