CAMDEN and EASTPORT – Alice Marion Green, 96, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at the Anderson Inn, Quarry Hill, Camden. Alice was born Aug. 2, 1910, in Eastport, to Herbert H. and Florence M. Lowe Green. She attended Shead Memorial High School graduating valedictorian in 1927 at age 16. She then attended Washington State Teachers College receiving her elementary education diploma and her Bachelor of Science degree in education. After this, Alice received her master’s degree from the University of Maine. Alice was a dedicated teacher. She taught for several years in Robbinston. Later she taught in the Eastport school system for 43 years, many of those as principal of the Eastport Primary School. During this time, Alice taught, in some instances, three generations of families living in Eastport. Alice enjoyed needlepoint, knitting, crocheting, and sewing. Upon her retirement, she traveled to many destinations worldwide. Alice was very active in the local lodges for many years and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekah’s and the Pythian Sisters. Alice wrote the “Degree of the Golden Rose” for the Pythian Sisters and in 1987, she was chosen to receive the degree. Alice was a member of the Central Congregational Church, Eastport and served as treasurer for many years. The church’s architect and builder was Daniel Lowe, Alice’s grandfather. The last few years of her life she was a resident at the Anderson Inn, Quarry Hill, where she was cared for by a dedicated, caring and thoughtful staff. Alice was predeceased by a sister, Edna Green Mathews; and a brother, Herbert Green. She is survived by her nephew, Donn Mathews and his wife, Roberta, of South Portland; and her niece, Judy Peters and her husband, George, of South Hope. Alice will be fondly remembered as “Ah-Ah” by her two great-nephews, George B. Peters III, M.D. and Don M. Peters, both of Annapolis, Md. Box 99, Eastport, ME 04631 or to the Resident Activity Fund, Anderson Inn, 30 Community Drive, Camden, ME 04843. There will be a graveside service at Hillside Cemetery, Eastport, in the spring. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
