BAR HARBOR – Allan Russell Kimball died Oct. 1, 2004, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility. He was born March 1, 1921, in Montpelier, Vt. the son of Charles D. and Florence (Taplin) Kimball. He graduated from high school in Tiffin, Ohio in 1938 having studied printing. Returning to Montpelier he did his apprenticeship with the Leahy Print Shop and then moved to Boston to work for a newspaper there. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard an LST throughout the European Theatre during World War II and was at the Invasion of Normandy. Upon discharge he moved to Bar Harbor, in March of 1946 and began his 50 plus year career with The Bar Harbor Times. That July, he married Margaret Kelley and settled in to his new community. He was again called to serve his country during the Korean War and returned to Maine in 1953. Allan was a devoted husband and father. Also, an active member of the Bar Harbor Congregational Church, a Cub Scout Master for the Bar Harbor Boy Scouts during the late 1940’s and 1950’s. He played the drums in the Town Band and on many occasions marched in the holiday parades with the veterans or as part of The Spirit of ’76. He was a regular visitor to the local health care facilities and enjoyed visiting the folks there. He was a member of the Hancock County Habitat for Humanity Projects and took great joy in the houses that became homes for the families. His motto was always “find a need and fill it.” He was predeceased by his four older brothers, Maxwell, Hugh, Wayne and Howard Kimball, by his beloved wife, Maggie, and by a great-granddaughter, Murron Phelps. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Ellen Kimball of Lamoine, Joyce and husband, David Pilling, of Ellsworth. Also, grandson, Chad King of Old Town; and granddaughter, Jenifer and husband, Philip Phelps and their daughter, Kylara Phelps of Ellsworth. He is survived by many, many nieces and nephews, and one dear friend, he considered family, Carolyn Hamm. A Memorial Service of Celebration and Joy will be held 10:30 Friday, Oct. 8, at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church-UCC with the Rev. Dr. Sandra Reed officiating.
