SOUTHPORT – Kendrick B. Tibbetts, 89, of Southport passed away quietly Sept. 29, 2004, at St. Andrew’s Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. He was the beloved husband of Jean S. Tibbetts to whom he had been married for 54 years. Ken was born in Keene, N.H., on Sept. 12, 1915, to Merrick S. and Marion B. Tibbetts of Friendship and Searsmont, respectively. Ken was a graduate of Bentley College in Boston and later of New York University Stern School of Business, earning his CPA. Ken served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as a first lieutenant. After the war, Ken joined Charles F. Rittenhouse & Co. in Boston as an accountant and was transferred to New York City in 1946. He joined the Broadway Congretional Church in New York, where he served as church clerk. There he met Laszlo “Pip” Simonyi, who introduced him to his daughter Jean. Ken and Jean were married at the church July 29, 1950. After a 24 year career in public accounting, he joined Heidelberg Eastern Inc., makers of fine art printing presses. In 1973, Ken and Jean retired to the Southport home that had been in he Simonyi family since the mid-forties. Retirement didn’t last long as they opened the gift store “Two’s Company” in Boothbay Harbor, a fixture at 45 Commercial St. from 1973 to 1984. After selling the store Ken and Jean retired to country living with a smile, a wave, and a handclasp for all. Ken is survived by daughters, Mary W. Tibbetts M.D. of Morton Grove, Ill., (Eugene Maslana), and Jean H. Tibbetts, M.D. of Bangor, (Richard Lenz M.D.); three grandchildren, and brother, Merrick S. Tibbetts Jr. of Rumson, N.J. A sister, Dorothy T. Small, predeceased. Friends and neighbors are welcome to join the family at a memorial service to be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Tibbetts’ home, “Pip’s Bluff.” In Ken’s memory, donations may be sent to St. Andrew’s Hospital, Boothbay Harbor. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Simmons Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
