A man was killed Thursday night during a confrontation with Portland police.
Jacob Hastings, 37, allegedly was armed with a gun and threatening staff at Nova Seafood on Commercial Street after 9:30 p.m., according to Brad Nadeau, a spokesperson for the Portland Police Department.
Not long before that, officers were called to Spring and Oak streets, where gunshots had been reported.
But before police arrived at Nova Seafood, Hastings allegedly fled in a stolen pickup truck.
Meanwhile, police were getting reports of crashes and other vehicles stolen at gunpoint.
Police eventually found Hastings on Congress Street and pursued him down the Franklin Arterial to the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal on Commercial Street, where Hastings crashed, Nadeau said Friday morning.
Officers chased him on foot into the outdoor ferry terminal.
Hastings then allegedly reached into his waistband and acted as though he had a gun pointed at police, who opened fire.
Hastings died at the scene, and a gun was found in one of the stolen vehicles, according to Nadeau.
Officers Anthony George, Jordin Jackson and Greg Ishihara have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure whenever officers use deadly force, according to Nadeau.
The Maine attorney general’s office is investigating, as is standard procedure whenever law enforcement uses deadly force in the state.
