BELFAST – Allen Smalley Horne died peacefully Feb. 11, 2007, at Tall Pines Health Care, Belfast. He was born April 23, 1926, in Belfast, the son of Fred O.J. and Edith Lillian (Smalley) Horne. Allen lived in Belfast his entire life, graduated from Crosby High School in 1944 and Maine Maritime Academy in 1946. In 1949, he went to work for his brother, Philip, at Colburn Shoe Store, Belfast. He later bought the shoe store in 1972 and in 1986 sold the store to the present owner, his son, Brian. He enjoyed the outdoors – bird hunting in the fall with his brothers, Don, Oscar, Phil; and his nephews, Terry and Jon. Allen and his wife, Jane, spent many hours in their boat on the Penobscot Bay. Family was an important part of Allen’s life. He was very involved in high school athletics and other events of his children and grandchildren. He almost never missed a football game or track meet, no matter what the weather. Allen had been a member of Belfast Lodge of Masons since 1948, Scottish Rite bodies and Consistory. He joined Anah Temple in 1979 where he was a member of the second section. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane (Palmer) Horne; his daughters, Chilloa “Puzz” Caswell and Jane Littlefield and husband, Robert; his sons, Blaine and wife, Deborah, Brian and wife, Cathy Horne; his grandchildren, Kate and Stewart Caswell, Nathan and Audrey Littlefield, Jeremy Horne and his wife, Lauren, Nealley Horne, Colby and Garren Horne, Elizabeth Wakem and her husband, Andrew, Sara Pattershall and her companion, Jacob Breshears; and his great-grandchildren, Morgan Alice Fernald and Wyatt Allen Horne. He is also survived by his brother, Philip Horne and his wife, Frances, of Winter Haven, Fla. Allen also had several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, with the Rev. Kate Winters officiating.
