OAKLAND – Alta S. Bickford, 97, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Oak Grove Living Center, Waterville. She was born Dec. 16, 1910, in East Machias, one of 16 children to Horatio and Annie (Worrell) Lund. Among the oldest children, it was her responsibility to look after the younger members of the family, which she did with great pride and skill. Alta married Phillip Pliney and had three sons, Phillip, who is deceased, Frank of Waterville and Paul, who came to take care of her in 1993, after a severe stroke made it difficult for her to live alone. Paul died in 2006. After the death of her first husband, Alta married Leo Bickford of Oakland, he died in 1988. She was a devoted wife and enjoyed her home on High Street. Alta loved to cook and clean, and was loved by all who knew her. Surviving is one son, Frank Gray of Waterville; two sisters, Edith Wall of Utah and Mary Campbell of Machias; brother, Maurice Lund of Machias; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland, where friends may call noon until the time of the service. Burial will be later in the spring at Lake View Cemetery, Oakland.
