OLD TOWN – Alton Lionel Moore Jr. passed away July 17, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born April 28, 1926, the son of Alton L. Moore and Mary (Kimball) Moore. Alton graduated from Orono High School, and after that, enlisted in the Army. When he returned from service, he married Lillian King and together they settled in Old Town. Alton was a grocer for A&P for 37 years. After he retired from there, he continued to work at Thriftway for another 15 years. Alton was a proud member of Holy Family Church, Old Town, and also a former member of Knights of Columbus. Alton enjoyed gardening, fishing and an avid reader. He was quite the jokester and had a sharp sense of humor. Alton is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Lillian (King) Moore; his children, Gloria Herrick and her husband, Paul W., Frances Eldridge, David Moore and his wife, Judy, and Christopher Moore and his wife, Emily; his nine grandchildren, Susan Roberts and husband, Shawn, Sam Herrick and his wife, Cindy, Steven Herrick and his wife, Stacey, Sharon Gerving and her husband, Lance, Shannon Smith and her husband, Philip, Amber-Jean Eldridge, Andy Moore and his wife, Jesi, Jenny Gallant and her husband, Kevin, and Kristen Moore; and his eight great-grandchildren, Alex, Jasmine, Isaac, Abby, Cole, Alison, Reilly and Bella. Alton is also survived by his brother, Jerome Moore; and his sister, Virginia Thurston and her husband, Robert. He was predeceased by his parents; and his son-in-law, William Eldridge. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town, with Father Thomas Farley officiating. Interment will be immediately after at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to share memories of Alton at a luncheon after the interment at the parish hall.
