WATERVILLE – Andrew Demkowicz went to be with the Lord on Dec. 20, 2003. He was born March 6, 1921, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Andrew and Kathryn (Houdzakiewicz) Demkowicz. He was a graduate of Jersey City High School in New Jersey and attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. Andrew started his 40-year employment with the Scott Paper Co. as a mechanical engineer and rose to supervisor of the company’s quality control division. During World War II, he served as a corporal under the direction of General George Patton in Germany, France and England and was a member of the American Legion. He was an accomplished artist, as witnessed in his detailed pencil sketches of historic European buildings during his wartime service, to his dramatic oil landscape paintings. He volunteered his artistic talents to create detailed diagrams of paper making processes and scenery for talent productions. His interests included hand crafting authentic scale replicas of sailing ships from stained glass and was a frequent participant at craft shows in the northeast with his wife, Loretta. Andrew was an avid fisherman and enjoyed both downhill and cross-country skiing. He appeared on screen in several major motion pictures filmed in Maine. Andrew enjoyed his retirement to the fullest and one of his greatest enjoyments was sharing his life with his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family and many nieces and nephews. Andrew is survived by his best friend and wife of 61 years, Loretta (Karbowski) Demkowicz; his daughter, Joyce Henckler and her husband, Donald, of Oviedo, Fla. (formerly of Bangor, Maine); grandsons Adam and Aaron; and his son, Robert Demkowicz and his wife, Michele and granddaughter, Mackenzie, of Winthrop; two sisters, Helen Demkowicz and Anne Bas; one brother, Michael Demkowicz and his family. Andrew was predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Joseph, Nicholas and John Demkowicz. There will be no public visitation at the request of Andrew. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Notre Dame Church, 112 Silver Street in Waterville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were made with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St. Waterville.
