MATTAWAMKEAG – Anna (Larson) McCafferty, 91, wife of the late Elroy McCafferty, died April 6, 2008, at a Dover-Foxcroft nursing home. She was born June 8, 1916, in Williamsburg, the daughter of Sven and Gladys (Pomelow) Larson. Anna graduated from Brownville High School. She later married and resided in Mattawamkeag, where she and Elroy raised six children. In 1949, they purchased the former Shorettes Diner and operated it for several years. Anna then became a proprietor of Town and Country Clothing store, retiring in 1970. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Winn, where she taught classes for several years and became a charter member of Daughters of Isabella, Lincoln. She was also a charter member of Hamm-McGinley Auxiliary No. 7409 of Mattawamkeag, an active member in the senior citizens and enjoyed attending the duplicate bridge club in Lincoln. Anna, with the help of her assistants, Norma Robichaud and Dean Spearin, organized the Merry Maker 4-H club. Many fond memories of the girls, their crafts and their love of basketball were made. She became an avid fan of the sport throughout the years with her own family. Quilting and knitting for the grandchildren and others in need gave her great pleasure. Anna was predeceased by her loving husband, Elroy “Mickey” in 1984; a son, Alfred, in a 1956 in a plane accident; and a son, Ivan “Bub” in 2001. She was also predeceased by her parents, seven brothers and six sisters. She is survived by her children, a son, Stanley and wife, Helen, of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Doris Bearce and husband, Orrin, of Waterville; a son, Kenneth and wife, Janice, of Florida; a daughter, Myrna Kean of South Portland; many grandchildren, great-grand-children, great-great-grand-children, nieces and nephews. A later date will be announced for the Mass and committal service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church, Winn or Mattawamkeag Rescue Squad.
