ORRINGTON and RIVERSIDE, Ill. – Anne M. Bicknell, 88, wife of the late Albert Wagner Bicknell, died Oct. 10, 2006, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, the daughter of Francis P. and Theresa M. (Farrell) Healey. Anne’s family moved from St. Lawrence, Newfoundland to Boston, and in 1924 to Brooklyn, N.Y. She graduated from St. Anne’s Academy in 1936. Anne worked at Best and Company and met Albert W. Bicknell when he was a senior at Brooklyn Polytechnical Institute. Married in 1940 at St. Francis Church, Brooklyn, N.Y., and after Mr. Bicknell received a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan and his law degree from Georgetown University; they made Riverside Ill., a suburb of Chicago, their home for more than 50 years. Anne attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Riverside, Ill., and her interests included Riverside Dance Club, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Theater and Ballet, Infant Welfare Society, Riverside Garden Club, Cub Scouts and volunteering at McNeal Memorial Hospital for many years. An avid gardener and bridge player, Anne traveled extensively and especially enjoyed cooking, entertaining and hosting dinner parties. After her husband of 63 years died March 2003, Anne moved to Maine to be closer to her son, Albert F. Bicknell and his wife, Elizabeth, of Orrington. She is survived by a daughter, Joan Lorna Poveda Bicknell and her husband, Vicente, of Madrid, Spain. Anne was especially proud of her five grandsons, Jonathan Albert Bicknell of Winter Park, Fla., Jason James Bicknell of Portland, David Patrick Poveda and his wife, Susana, of Madrid, Spain, Joshua Vicente Poveda and his wife, Amani, of Bamako, Mali, Africa and Noah Vicent Poveda of Madrid, Spain; four special great-granddaughters, Lorca Blanca Poveda, Nuala Anne Poveda, Sophie Anne Mandela Poveda and Isabella King Poveda; three sisters, Lorna Skrivseth of Wisconsin, Mary Francis Cavanagh of Long Island, N.Y., Theresa Cavanagh of California; several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one infant son, Thomas Farrell Bicknell; one brother, Francis Healey; a sister, Cecelia McCoy; brother-in-law, Harry Cavanagh. The family thanks the wonderful staff of Westgate Manor and New Hope Hospice for their loving care given to Anne. Services will be announced later in the spring.
