SOUTH BERWICK – Annette Pembroke Whicher, 56, passed away Sept. 20, 2007, at home. She loved York Beach, where she worked during the summer as a young woman, and met her husband of 31 years, Stan, before beginning her career as a dedicated teacher. Her first teaching job was in her hometown of Dover-Foxcroft, as a third grade teacher. She then taught third grade for two years in Boothbay, another area of Maine, which she loved. She left teaching for six years to raise two boys, Casey and Ryan. She was devoted to the boys as an active part of their lives, encouraging and teaching them to excel in all aspects of their lives. After her hiatus, she returned to teaching at Ginger-Bread Nursery School, Sanford. After working part time at the nursery school for two years, she returned to a full-time teaching position at South Berwick Central School. At Central School, she taught pre-kindergarten for eight years before moving to first and second grades for 11 years. For Annette, teaching was not a job, but a way of life. Her weekends, vacations and summers were often spent in professional development, planning for learning and even taking students on planned field trips. Annette shared her love of learning with others by encouraging and supporting new and veteran staff members. Her over the top enthusiasm was an inspiration for everyone around her. She developed many wonderful learning experiences for all of the children at Central School. Students will remember Cruising the Continents, Maine Authors, Hopping through the Habitats and Animal Olympics, to name a few of the many creative ideas she developed to make learning a memorable experience. Annette was admired for her dedication and often arrived before school to work with students. She stayed long after the school day was over to tutor students in need of additional assistance. She loved every child as an individual, supporting them, recognizing their talents and helping them to believe in themselves. Everyone that walked through the doors of Central School will remember her unique flair for dressing just for them, the costumes she wore on many occasions, her love of books and reading, her smiles and “wiggle hugs,” and most of all, her friendship. Annette was predeceased by her parents, Clifford “Buzz” and Velma Pembroke. She is survived by her husband, Stan; children, Casey and Ryan; as well as her brother, Rick Pembroke; nieces, Ashlie McLeish, Liza Smith and their families. A small memorial service for family will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to South Berwick Central School, 197 Main St., South Berwick, ME 03908. Any contribution made will be used for playground improvements in Annette’s memory.
