DEDHAM and DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Arlene B. Byther, 99, died Feb. 18, 2007, at a Daytona Beach, Fla., health care facility. She was born Feb. 17, 1908, in Dedham, the daughter of Orlando and Agnes (Ginn) Grindle. Arlene was a graduate of Bangor High School, Class of 1926, Washington State Teachers College in 1933, and the University of Maine in 1958. She taught grammar school in Eddington, Holden, Stetson, Albion Training School, Washington State Teachers College in 1933-34, and her last 21 years in a Brewer grammar school. She was a member of the Westminster By the Sea Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach, Fla., and a former member of the Tuscon Chapter OES. She is survived by her stepdaughter, Mary-Alice Look of Whiting; four stepgrand-children, Daniel K. Jones and his wife Vicki, Linda Jenkins, Jonathan W. Mailman and his wife, Kathleen, Jamie Marshall and her husband, Christopher; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by close friends, Gene and Barbara Masterson, who have been like a second family to her; by her friend, Louise Mayo; and a special cousin, Mary Jane Pierce. She was predeceased by her husbands, W. Raymond Blood and Basil N. Byther; and by a stepdaughter, Joyce Jones. Plans will be announced for a funeral service at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, Brewer, in the spring. Interment will be after the service at Harts Corner Cemetery, Holden.
