NEWNAN, Ga. – Arlo Bernard “Bernie” Farrington Jr. died Aug. 17, 2007, at his home. He was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Bangor, the son of the late Arlo and Carolyn Farrington. A 1943 graduate of Bangor High School, Bernie served during World War II in the European theater as a member of the 168th Combat Engineers. He participated in five major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. His unit received commendations from both Belgium and French governments. After returning from serving his country, he attended Husson College, Bangor. Bernie retired from Kraft Foods Co., after 35 years as sales supervisor in Maine. He also worked for Brunswick Transportation Co., and the Westbrook School Department. At the age of 62, he moved from Maine to Georgia, where he and his wife opened the first Blimpie Restaurant in the area. During the nine years he operated the business, he won many honors and served as president of the Georgia Blimpie franchisees. He was a Kiwanian for many years and a member of the Newnan Coweta Art association until recently. After the sale of his business, Bernie worked for Kmart and then for NAPA Auto Parts for more than five years. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, Newnan, ser-ving on a number of committees. A former member of First Baptist Church, Westbrook, he served as chairman of every major board and as deacon. A former member of Columbia Street Baptist Church, Bangor, he served as a deacon and chairman on many boards. He served as president of Bob Graves Evangelistic Association. In addition to his parents, his sister, Joyce, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor “Ellie”; and his children, Cynthia and E. Bruce Cameron of Katy, Texas, David and Sandra Farrington of Atlanta, Ga., Sheryl and Steven Schulz of Sanford, Jayne Farrington of Charlotte, N.C., Brian and Leanne Farrington of Fayetteville, Ga; grandchildren include, Heather and Jeff Parnell and Darren Cameron of Katy, Texas, Tayla and Tripp Turner of Savannah, Ga., Christopher Schulz, Evan Schulz, Bernie Schulz of Sanford, Amy Farrington, Corrie Farrington and Anna Farrington of Fayette-ville, Ga. Also survivng are his sister, Shirley and Charles Brewster of Brewer; sisters-in-law, Margene Smith of Orono, Barbara Haskell of Orrington, Roberta Scott of Sullivan, Gloria and John Faulkner of Eddington; brothers-in-law, Vau-ghn and Judith Smith of Bangor and Sheldon and Marion Smith of Navajo Dam, N.M. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at McKoon Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Patterson and the Rev. Jerry Walker officiating.
