KITTERY – Arlo Sloat Foster, 70, of Haley Road, died unexpectedly Sept. 13, 2007, at York Hospital. Born June 12, 1937, in Houlton, he was a twin son of Wendell and Marion (Gilman) Foster. He attended local schools graduating from Houlton High School in 1955. In 1960 he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Arlo was a graduate of the Culinary Institute, New Haven, Conn., and operated his own restaurant in Houlton for a time and worked in the hospitality industry for many years after. He worked locally as the manager for the Rockingham Ballroom in Portsmouth, N.H., Howard Johnson’s and the former Downeast Donuts where he was famous for his confectionary creations. He enjoyed a longtime closeness with the staff at Bosn’s Landing, having many as dear friends. He also worked in the hospitality field in Bel-Air Fla., at the Belview Biltmore. He met his wife to be in 1966 and in 1970 they were married. They made a home for a number of years in Eliot and for the last 10 years in Kittery. He and his wife wintered for a number of years in Delray Beach, Fla. Arlo enjoyed his home gardens and any outdoor work in his yard. He was a member of Houlton Monument Masonic Lodge and several years ago was affiliated with St. Aspinquid Lodge, York, where he enjoyed many friendships. He is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice (Feeney) Foster of Kittery; a brother, Alan and his wife, Barbara Foster, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and their daughter, Alison Foster, of Miami; a sister, Betty Spicer of Plaster Rock, New Brunswick; nieces, Beverly Gray of North Berwick, Gloria Sevigny of Berwick and Janet Turner of Springvale; and a dear friend, Sylvia Brennick of York.
