LUBEC and BANGOR – Arthur Wellesley Fowler Jr., 76, of Federal Harbor, Lubec, formerly of the greater Bangor area, died Jan. 19, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born May 8, 1929, in Medford, Mass., the son of Arthur Wellesley Fowler Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth (Landry) Fowler. Art was a graduate of Bangor High School, where he was an outstanding athlete and known as “Icky” Fowler, where he helped Bangor win the State Basketball Championship in 1947. Following high school, he had a brief career in Minor League Baseball, interrupted by an arm injury. He then attended and graduated from Higgins Classical Institute. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War where he was also active in baseball and basketball to improve armed forces morale. For many years and up to the time of his death, Art had been a well-known and respected insurance and investment agent for Connecticut Mutual and, in more recent years, with Mass Mutual. He was a member of the Bangor Jaycees, Triangle Club, the Lubec Lions Club and the Small Wood Lot Owners Association of Maine. Art enjoyed coaching his sons in the youth basketball league at the YMCA in Bangor. He was a champion and competitive cribbage player, a gourmet cook and loved to entertain friends and family. Art had a great sense of humor. He was a sportsman all his life who loved his dog, Ellie and the people and the state of Maine. He will be remembered as an honest and strong individual who was and will continue to be an inspiration to family and friends. Surviving are four children, Catherine “Cathi” F. Moores and her husband, Larry, of Etna, David A. Fowler and his wife, Kelly, of Casco, Mark A. Fowler and his wife, April, of Osborn, Jane A. Shaw and her husband, John, of Portland; the mother of his children, Nancy (Gould) Fowler; 12 grandchildren, Russell Moores, Lisa Moores, Sarah Fowler, Stephanie Fowler, Lucy Fowler, Seth Fowler, Liza Fowler, Lauren Fowler, Hannah Fowler, Amy Shaw, McKenzie Shaw and Phoebe Shaw; one sister, Eleanor Crowell and her husband, Hank, of Florida; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Carolyn Thompson; and one brother, Lee L. Fowler. The family would like to thank the staff of Eastern Maine Medical Center, Kelly 3, and C Unit of the Maine Veterans’ Home for taking such good care of our father and attending to his needs with compassion. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 4-6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A private interment will be held at a later date.
