CASTINE – Arthur Herbert Kiendl Jr., 82, died peacefully March 2, 2005, at his beloved home in Castine. He was born May 26, 1922, in Glen Rock, N.J. the son of Molly (Moneypenny) and Arthur H. Kiendl Sr. Arthur attended the New Hampton School, N.H., Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., Columbia University, New York, N.Y., West Point, and the University of Chicago. He spent his lengthy career in school administration in several capacities. He served as the Dean of Students at Dartmouth College from 1948-1958, as the Dean of Students at Colorado University, Boulder, Colo. from 1958-1963, was the Headmaster of Northfield Mount Hermon School, Northfield, Mass. from 1963-1971, was the President of Cranbrook Schools, Bloomfield, Mich. from 1971-1980, and retired from the Nichols School, Buffalo, N.Y., as Headmaster in 1981. He was a U.S. Army veteran, served on the Faculty Advisory Board at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, and was a member of the Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine. He enjoyed boats, being with people, and had a great sense of humor right until the end. He is survived by a daughter, Deborah McLaughlin of Portland, Ore.; a son, Arthur H. Kiendl III of Warren, Vt.; a step-son, Kenneth Lewis of Eagle Point, Ore.; grandchildren, James McLaughlin of Norfolk, Va., Alex McLaughlin of Portland, Ore., Jesse Kiendl of Seville, Spain; a sister, Beverly Fisher of Hawaii; several nieces and nephews; many friends. He was predeceased by first wife, Jean (Sprague) Kiendl; second wife, Alice (Williams) Kiendl; a sister, Barbara Smith. A memorial service will be held at the Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine in July. Donations in Arthur’s memory may be made to the Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine, P.O.
