SOUTH GOULDSBORO – Arthur L. Mitchell, 85, of South Gouldsboro, died Dec. 15, 2003, at a local hospital. He was born July 2, 1918, the son of Melvin “Pete” Mitchell Jr. and Vera (Robinson) Mitchell Dow. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Myrtle Jordan. He graduated from Washington Academy in East Machias and attended Beal Business College until he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1939. He graduated from officers candidate school and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Pacific during World War II. He was a Boy Scout leader and a lifelong member of the Masons, the Odd Fellows and the Encampment. He was past commander of the American Legion Post No. 69 in Southwest Harbor, adjutant of American Legion Post No. 207 in Trenton, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 109 in Ellsworth. He worked at Jackson Laboratory for 24 years as a research assistant. During his retirement years he dealt in antiques. He is survived by three sons, Danny Mitchell and his wife, Charlotte Stewart Mitchell, of South Gouldsboro, Larry Mitchell of Hancock, and Gary Mitchell and his wife, Joyce Saunders, of Ellsworth. He has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, a special sister, Beatrice Martin of Ellsworth, and a special sister-in-law, Dorothy Jordan Hutchins of South Gouldsboro. A military service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2003, at American Legion Post No. 207 in Trenton with the Rev. Bernard Arsenault officiating.
