SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Arthur L. Reed, 81, died July 19, 2006, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. He was born Oct. 11, 1924, in Southwest Harbor, the son of Raymond W. and Violet (Moore) Reed Sr. Arthur owned and operated Gilley Plumbing Co. of Southwest Harbor for 33 years. He was an avid sportsman and a real practical joker. He enjoyed Mount Desert Island sports, especially watching his grandchildren play, and remained an active participant in all aspects of their lives. He was a member of the Tremont Masonic Lodge of Southwest Harbor, Scottish Rites of Bangor, Anah Temple Shrine, the Hancock County Shrine Club and the American Legion of Southwest Harbor. Arthur is survived by his son, Arthur L. Reed II and his wife, Mary, of Poland; one daughter, Cynthia J. Reed of Saco; one brother, Merle B. Reed of Cape Elizabeth; two grandchildren, Matthew A. Reed of New York and Kelly E. Reed of North Haven; and a special friend, Jane Dunbar. He was predeceased by his wife, Bertha (Coombs) Reed; and brothers, Ralph, Cecil and Raymond Jr. Graveside memorial services will be held 5 p.m. Saturday, July 22, at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor, with Pastor Robert Maddocks officiating.
