CARIBOU – Averill A. (Hale) Belyea, wife of Donald L. Belyea, died May 14, 2006, at a Caribou hospital after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 19, 1920, in Caribou, the daughter of Maurice and Minnie (Sharpe) Hale. After graduation from Caribou High School, Class of 1938, she worked for Maine Bag Co. She married the love of her life, Donald, June 14, 1942 and together they farmed for nearly 50 years, raised their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all in Caribou. She was 50-year member of Gray Memorial United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School for many years. She will be remembered by family and friends as a loving, caring, kind and gentle wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She loved flowers and growing them in her gardens and watching the countless species of birds attracted to her kitchen window feeders. But especially she enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren over the many years as they came to sample “Grammie Chickie’s” delicious baked goods. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Donald; sons, Ronald and wife, Paula, of Columbia, Mo., David and wife, Sheila, of Caribou, Stephen and wife, Joan, of Hermon; one sister, Carol Parker and husband, John, of Seymour, Ind.; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grand-children. She was predeceased by brothers Lendell and Thomas. Friends may call 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Mockler Funeral Home, Caribou. A celebration of her life will be held 10 a.m. Thursday May 18, at the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, Caribou, with the Rev. Anna Beach officiating. Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery, Caribou.
