MACHIAS – Avis Grace Mallar Bowker, 88, died Feb. 5, 2006, at the Marshall Health Care Facility. She was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Marshfield, the daughter of James and Flora (Hoyt) Mallar. She graduated from Machias Memorial High School in 1936. Avis worked as a telephone operator until the company was automated. She worked several years as a sales person at a local store. She was a librarian at Porter Memorial Library and at University of Maine Machias, until retirement. Avis was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Machias Valley Sportsman Club, Washington County Extension and other local organizations. Avis loved to cook. She enjoyed sharing her baked goods with everyone! She took great pride in her two grandsons. She is survived by her son, Dennis Bowker and wife, Linda; grandson, Adam and wife, Regina, of Dover, N.H.; grandson, Daniel and friend, Rose, of Marshfield; and nephews, Richard, John, William and James Mallar and families. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence Richard Bowker; two brothers and sisters-in-law, J. Lawrence Mallar and wife, Margaret, of Marshfield and Lowell Mallar and wife, Dorothy, of Machias. Avis placed her life in the Lord and was a devout member of Marshfield Congregational Church, where a memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Marshfield Congregational Church.
