MILFORD – Avis L. Oberg, 94, wife of the late Frederick N. Oberg, died peacefully Feb. 12, 2006, at an Orono healthcare facility following a long illness with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born Dec. 14, 1911, in Greenbush, the third daughter of Alonzo and Elizabeth (Harris) Cunningham. After graduating from Old Town High School, she attended Farmington Normal School where she received her teacher certification. She taught school in Greenbush and Olamon. Avis married Frederick Oct. 27, 1938 and they had two children. In 1944, her husband enlisted in the U.S. Army for World War II. While he was away, she cared for many foster children. She also cared for many other children throughout her life. Avis attended the Milford Congregational Church and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and looked forward to their annual Christmas Fair where she crafted many items. She also crocheted baby sets, knitted mittens and socks, sewed baby quilts and baked pies for church suppers and bake sales, earning money for the church all year long. She loved gardening, fishing, snowmobiling, boating and enjoyed their camps in Greenbush and at West Lake, where they made many good friends and warm memories. She spent time with her grandchildren at every opportunity, taking them to camp, practicing multiplication tables, reading to them, playing games, or just having fun. She was very proud of their achievements. She enjoyed homemaking and was a wonderful cook, which earned her the C.B. handle “Good Cook” at West Lake. She was a sports fan along with her husband and they enjoyed watching the Red Sox and going to the grandchildren’s baseball games. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Buchanan and her husband, Harry, of Milford; a son, Bruce Oberg and his wife, Diana, of Jamestown, S.C.; five grandchildren, Mark Buchanan and his fiance, Diane Knight, of Greenbush, Kristi Buchanan of Milford, Karel Depaola and her husband, Richard, of Milford, Brant Oberg and his wife, Teri, of Smithfield, Va., Erik Oberg and his wife, Leia, of Charleston, S.C.; six great-grandchildren, Jason Geroux of Old Town, Lindsay Geroux, Cameron and Bailey Depaola of Milford, Paxton and Logan Oberg of Smithfield, Va., a great-stepgranddaughter, Roxanne Paradise of Woolwich; a sister, Dorothy Weymouth of Greenbush; and a brother-in-law, Linwood Oberg of Texas; five nephews, three nieces and cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick; a brother, Alonzo “Buddy” Cunningham; three sisters, Noreen Wright, Hazel Madden and Katherine Pearson. A funeral service at the First Congregational Church of Milford and committal services at the Milford Cemetery will be announced in May. At her request there will be no visiting hours.
