ELLSWORTH and CRANBERRY ISLES – Barbara Lincoln (Spurling) Brooks, 91, passed away Dec. 28, 2003, in Brunswick, from congestive heart failure. She was born Feb. 12, 1912, at Cranberry Isles, the daughter of Charles Samuel and Edna Mae (Hatfield) Spurling. She attended schools at Cranberry Isles and Calais, graduating from Calais Academy. For the last 34 years her primary residences had been Ellsworth and Cranberry Isles. In failing health for the last four years she resided in assisted living apartments at Ocean View in Falmouth and The Governor King Wing of The Highland in Topsham. She was primarily a homemaker. She taught school in Monmouth during the 1950s. She served for many years on the board of the Congregational Church on Great Cranberry Island. She was a talented musician and artist. She played violin in the Augusta Symphony; and sang in the choirs of the Congregational Church in Ellsworth, and the Baptist and Episcopal churches in Augusta. She was a volunteer worker in the Hancock County Meals for Me and Hospice programs. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl A. Brooks; one son, Edward S. “Ebbie” Brooks; her sister, Louise H. Sorensen and her brother, Nelson E. Spurling. She is survived by one son and his wife, Carl N. and Patricia E. Brooks of Cranberry Isles, and by two grandsons, Francis C. Brooks of Yarmouth and Carl N. Brooks II of Philadelphia, Pa. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at the Fernald Funeral Chapel in Somesville with the Rev. Robert Benson officiating. A private graveside burial service will be held next summer. Memorial donations may be made to the Ladies Aid Society of Great Cranberry Island.
