ASHLAND – Bernard Dale Howes Sr., 70, died Aug. 19, 2005, at home where he had battled cancer bravely for a long time. Bernard liked to hunt, fish and work in his vegetable garden. He was an energetic outdoorsman who loved the woods and the home farm and was often described by one of his closest friends as “a true native son of Northern Maine”. He was a loving husband, father and friend. He especially loved to visit with family and friends making warm social times out of simple things, like picnics and homemade ice cream. He loved his church family dearly and was the head usher at the Ashland Advent Christian Church for many years. There are many young scholars that will have fond memories of his annual spring visits to their 1st grade class at the Ashland Central School to teach them how to make poplar whistles. Bernard was born in Masardis Sept. 14, 1934, the son of Edwin and Bessie (Bragdon) Howes. He attended the little South Ashland School and Ashland High School. He married Carlene Joyce Fleming “Jo” Sept. 10, 1955. In his young life he worked with his father on the family potato farm on the Masardis Road, and went on to work for Vaughn Lovely then Allen Bragdon (both chicken farmers in Ashland). For a short time in 1964, he moved his family to Lowell, Mass., to work clearing lots for Stephen Hews. Moving back to Ashland, he worked for the Maine Department of Transportation in the Ashland area. In 1966, he, Jo and family moved into the family farmhouse on the Masardis Road in Ashland where they presently reside. Bernard worked for Great Northern Paper Company starting in 1967 as a log loader operator, holding various laborer positions and retiring when the company sold out to Georgia Pacific Corp. in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Carlene (Fleming) Howes; four sons, Michael Dale Howes, Myron Lee Howes and his wife, Lillian (LaBelle), Lloyd Scott Howes, Bernard Dale Howes, Jr. and his wife, Laura (Blackmore); one daughter, Sharon Joyce Cobb and her husband, Roger Dalton Cobb, all of Ashland; two brothers, Stanferd Lloyd Howes and his wife, Beverly (McKay) of New Hampshire, Dana George Howes and his wife, Lois (Craig) Walker Howes; two sisters, Annis Roope and her husband, James, of Castle Hill, Enid White and her husband, Grover, of Guilford; nine grandchildren, Matthew Howes, Mark Howes, Carlene Howes, Isaac Howes, Eric Howes, Trevor Cobb, Sam Cobb, Jake Cobb, and Benjamin Howes; two great-grandchildren, Jessie Howes and Jayden Cormier.
