SACO – Bill J. Smith, 82, a resident of Main Street, passed away Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, at Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. He was born in Manhattan, New York City, N.Y. on Jan. 19, 1922, a son of Herbert A. and Marion A. (Smith) Nickerson. He graduated from Brewer High School, Class of 1942. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II. He was employed by Arthur Chapin Wholesale Delivery in Bangor for a few years. He also worked for Merrill Transport working in the Bangor Terminal for 34 years, retiring in 1985. His hobbies included Country Music, Horse Racing and NASCAR. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma I. (Sutherland) Smith of Saco; one son, Donald E. Smith of Dexter; one daughter, Rose L. Cayford of Raymond; three grandchildren, Teari L. Cayford, Shane Goggins and Marty Devlin; one great-grandchild, Mikayla Goggins. Visiting Hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, at Cote Funeral Home, corner of Beach and James Street, Saco. Burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Cote Funeral Home, Saco.
