BELFAST – Burton B. York, 92, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2007, at his residence. He was born May 21, 1915, in Mars Hill, son of Elden and Elizabeth (Palmer) York. He was a self-employed truck driver and worked for the State of Maine Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. Burt was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. He was stationed in England and was at Normandy Beach and landed at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was wounded and then discharged from the service to go home due to the injury Jan. 22, 1945. After he came home, he married Maxine Moody and continued to run his trucking business until 1970, when he went to work as a longshoreman for Jacker Corp., Searsport, until his retirement in 1978. Since then, he had traveled extensively and enjoyed his retirement until his death. A more complete human-interest story will be published at a later date. He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Elaine Elizabeth York; siblings, Harold York, Ida Curtis, Bernest Arvil York, and Carol Robert York. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Maxine I. (Moody) York of Belfast; his children, Elden E. York and wife, Karen, of Florida, Winston H. York of Belfast, Gary J. York of Ellsworth, Michael A. York and wife, Rebecca, of Orrington, Walter R. York and fianc?e, Teresa McQueen, of Belfast, and Eric L. York and wife, Beth, of Belfast; a sister, Henrietta Valley of Lakeland, Fla.; grandchildren, Sarah Burton York, Christopher J. York, Jonathan M. York, Brandon York, Jackson M. York, Kasidee E. York, Nicholas E. York, Ericka A. York, and Morgan Burton York; many nieces and nephews. Family and friends and invited to call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday. Interment with military honors will be held after at Grove Cemetery, Belfast. Those who wish may make donations in Burt’s memory to Beals House, One V.A. Center, Togus, ME 04330.
