PROSPECT HARBOR – C. William “Bill” Shipman, 81, died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at an Ellsworth hospital, after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Phillipsburg, N.J., the son of George F. and Elizabeth (Johnston) Shipman. Bill grew up in Easton, Pa. and graduated from Easton High School in 1942, and then entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. In 1946, he married Louise Jean Hendrickson and returned to M.I.T., earning his bachelor of science, master of science and doctor of science degrees. Bill taught at the University of Delaware, M.I.T. Fuels Lab and Worcester Polytechnic Institute until 1974, when he joined the Cabot Corporation, becoming director of research and development for their Carbon Black division. Bill and his wife came to Prospect Harbor in 1953 and returned each summer, building their home on Prospect Point in 1975. They retired in 1986 and became year round residents of Prospect Harbor. Bill was active in Downeast Horizons and Knox District Housing. A lover of music, he served a term on the board of directors of the Pierre Monteux School of Conducting. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Louise Shipman of Prospect Harbor; three children, Nancy, Jane and Becky; two grandchildren, Kyle and Lauren. He was predeceased by a brother, James Shipman. Bill was a communicant of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Ellsworth, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, with the Rev. Christopher Chornyak, rector, officiating. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Bill may be sent to Downeast Horizons, 1200 Route 3, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, State Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605 or to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Ellsworth.
