LAMOINE – Calvin R. Smith, 82, died unexpectedly Oct. 18, 2006. He was born July 17, 1924, the son of John LeRoy “Roy” Smith and Audrey (Hodgkins) Smith of Lamoine. Calvin lived his entire life in the town of Lamoine, with the exception of four years while serving during World War II from 1943 to 1947, as a machinist mate in the U.S. Navy, in the New Hebrides Islands of the South Pacific. As with many veterans’ of this generation, he chose not to speak of those years, instead focusing his attention on the future and living life to the fullest. He attended both Lamoine schools and Ellsworth High School. After serving in the Navy, Calvin and his father, Roy owned and operated a shingle mill on the family property for a number of years. He later became a master mason, working on commercial and private construction throughout New England. Sharing the skill and artistry of the mason’s trade, Calvin and his son, George “Skip,” worked side-by-side for more than 30 years until his retirement. He served as volunteer fire chief for the Town of Lamoine from the mid 1950s to early 1960s, a civic role his eldest son continues to this date. Calvin loved all things in nature: gardening, tapping trees for maple syrup and being in the woods. In later years, he was dedicated to the Frenchman’s Bay riders. He enjoyed decorating his yard for the holidays and sitting and watching the lights. He is survived by his three children, George “Skip” Smith and wife, Carol and their two daughters, Alisha and Megan, of Lamoine; daughter, Helen Tracey and her three daughters, Sue, Shelley and Linda of Lamoine; son, John of Quoddy Head and Lamoine; his sister, Rosa West of Ellsworth; eight grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews; his domestic partner, Mima Grindle; her daughters, Becky Mitchell and husband, Carlton and son, Paul of Lamoine; and Jerri Lee Grindle of Berkeley, Calif. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, with pastor Robert Maddocks officiating. Interment will be at Marlboro Cemetery, Lamoine. Gifts in Calvin’s memory may be made to the Lamoine Fire Department, care of Stu Marckoon, 603 Douglass Highway, Lamoine, ME 04605.
