BELFAST – Carl Hasselberg Otley, 75, passed away May 18, 2005. He was born May 11, 1930, in Upper Darby Township, Pa., the son of Jesse Darlington and Catherine (Hasselberg) Otley. Carl was a pilot, pioneered in white water rafting and loved fishing, the outdoors, observing wildlife, and building things with his hands. In addition to his outdoor activities, Carl was a mason, was on the Board of Directors of Fort Knox, was past president of Friends of the Belfast Library, and an active volunteer at Waldo County General Hospital. Carl is survived by his wife, Martha Coleman Otley; his son, Michael Darlington Otley and wife, Sarah; his daughter, Carol Kimball Otley and husband, Edward Cramp; three step-children, Robert, David and Andrew Spurdle; his twin sister, Alma Hix of Estes Park, Colo.; his brother, Jesse Darlington Otley Jr. of Earlville, Md.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Carl is predeceased by his son, Carl H. Otley Jr. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, at the Belfast City Boat House, 34 Commercial St., Belfast. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Friends of Fort Knox, P.O. Box 456, Bucksport, ME 04416, or to Friends of the Belfast Library, 106 High St., Belfast, ME 04915. Arrangements are under the care of Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast.
