EASTPORT – Carl L. Mahar, 81, died Monday, March 26, 2007, at a Calais nursing home. Carl was born May 14, 1925, in Pembroke, son of the late Eugene and Olive (Carter) Mahar. He married Jean Dudley in Eastport Oct. 19, 1946. Carl Mahar, SPCM retired from the U.S. Navy, a veteran of World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War. After retirement, Carl served as a lieutenant on the ship State of Maine for the Maine Maritime Academy. He attended the Blakey United Methodist Church and enjoyed walking, traveling and spending time with his family. Surviving are his loving wife of more than 60 years, Jean Mahar; a son, Paul Mahar and wife, Carolyn, of Dennysville; a daughter, Ruth Chaffey and husband, Richard, of Dennysville; two grandchildren, Joel Mahar of Bangor and Sarah Chaffey of Levant; two sisters and a brother, Elsie Cook and husband, Colby, Avis Whorley and Ralph Mahar and wife, Mary, all of Pembroke; special cousin, Alice Mahar of Baileyville; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Dennysville Cemetery with Pastor Bob Hinton officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Carl’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
