AUGUSTA – Carlton D. McGary, 77, of Ganniston Drive died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born March 15, 1927, in Farmington, the son of George and Freda (Dow) McGary. Carlton graduated from Farmington High School before entering the service. He served on an Underwater Demolition Team during World War II with the U.S. Navy. After the war he returned to college and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono. He worked as a banker at the First National Bank of Farmington; Loan Officer for First National Bank of Ithaca, N.Y.; Loan Officer for Depositors Trust in Augusta; and continued his banking career until his retirement in 1989 as president of Key Atlantic. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce; was a Past Master of the Farmington Masonic Lodge; past president of the Farmington Lions Club and had served on the Board of Directors at the Maine State Museum. Carlton enjoyed doing carpentry work and traveling worldwide. He was also an active supporter of the Kennebec Valley Humane Society. He was predeceased by a sister, Eloise Mulvihill; and a brother, Herbert McGary. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly McGary of Augusta; two sons, Alan D. McGary and his wife, Debra, of Manchester; C. Scott McGary and his wife, Rachel, of Auburn; a daughter, Deborah Nichols and her husband, Wayne, of Cross Lake; a brother, Carroll McGary of Manchester; five grandchildren, Stephanie McGary, Jessica McGary, Cameron McGary, Benton McGary and Colby Brann; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, at Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday.
