SCARBOROUGH – Carole Newland Bowker passed away Nov. 13, 2005. Born Dec. 25, 1919, in Enfield on Wash, England. She was one of the earliest war brides to arrive in America crossing the Atlantic with an escort of military destroyers on a ship returning officers and the wounded to the States. Initially settling in Lincoln where her husband’s family was involved in the pulp and paper industry, she, her husband, Frederick and two daughters, Lindsay and Cherrie moved to Portland in 1954. Carole was active and popular in many bridge and garden clubs for more than 50 years including the Portland Country Club and the Women’s Literary Union. Her gardens, flower arrangements and specimen entries in flower shows often took prizes and awards. She was a founding member of the Osewantha Garden Club and a member of the Junior Burns Club for many years. She was active in parish activities at St. Lukes Cathedral for more than two decades and a founding member of the St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Scarborough. She is predeceased by her husband, Frederick; and two brothers, James and Dennis. She is survived by her two children, Lindsay Newland Bowker of Stonington and Cherrie Cianchette of Falmouth; three grandchildren, Erin Ryan and Jason Cianchette; and a brother, Roy of Devon, England, as well as several nieces and nephews in the United States and England. Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at Emmanuel Chapel St. Lukes Cathedral. In lieu of flowers donations would be welcome in her name to the Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Rd., Scarborough, ME 04074. There will be a luncheon following the service at the home of her daughter, Cherrie and her husband, Rocky, 17 Thornhurst Rd., Falmouth.
