LIBERTY – Carolyn A. Thompson, 81, passed away peacefully Aug. 20, 2008, surrounded by her loving family and friends at PenBay Medical Center, Rockport. She was born May 31, 1927, in Liberty, the daughter of Claudius and Ivanella (Jackson) Knowlton. Carolyn graduated in 1944 from Walker High School, Liberty. She moved to Belfast to work for the telephone company for many years. She also worked for the SAD 34 school system as a cook and custodian. Other jobs included J.C. Penney and the Deborah Lincoln House, Belfast. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Carolyn was an avid card player and enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, reading and jigsaw puzzles. She was predeceased by her parents; and two sisters, Ruth Linscott and Erma Overlock. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Vernon L. Thompson; two sons, Richard Greenlaw and wife, Jane, of Lincoln and Arthur Greenlaw and wife, Winnie, of Millinocket; a daughter, Jean Thompson Nielsen of Winthrop; five grand-children whom she adored, Brian, Adam, Benjamin, Brad and Logan; two great-grand-children, Grace and Brent; three sisters, Louise Smith and her husband, Royce, Mary Grindle and Barbara Sylvester; two brothers, Justin Knowlton and his wife, Bella and Wade Knowlton and his wife, Sandra; many nieces and nephews; as well as a close and dear sister-in-law, Helen Burns and her husband, Harry. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Maine Veterans’ Cemetery, Augusta, with Pastor Michael Kee officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held after the service at the Masonic Hall, Liberty. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Liberty Ambulance Service or Special Care Unit of PenBay Medical Center. Arrangements are being made by Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
