MILLINOCKET – Charlene Friel Poirier, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007, at Millinocket Regional Hospital, after a short bout with cancer. She was born Jan. 29, 1936, one of 12 children to Margaret and Leo Friel. She graduated from Stearns High School in 1954 and went into a banking career at Millinocket Trust Co. for 21 years, retiring in 1976. After years of hard work she rose to the position of loan officer. By being compassionate and using her creative thought process, Charlene helped hundreds of families that could not have normally afforded a home, car, college, or other loans to access a better level of living. She truly believed that everyone should have an equal opportunity in life. Charlene married Herbert J. Poirier in 1955, and became a mother to three boys, Cedric in 1955, Michael in 1956 and Brian in 1958. She loved to crochet, knit, do crossword puzzles and was a voracious reader, with Stephen King and John Grisham being amongst her favorite authors. As a former member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries for more than 30 years, she participated in numerous community service activities. Additionally, her husband, Herbert still resides in Millinocket. Her son, Cedric lives in Sabbatus, while Michael lives on Staten Island, N.Y. She is survived by two sisters, Nadine Randall of San Antonio and Audrey Richards. She is also survived by four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. She was predeceased by Brian in 1987. Charlene will be sorely missed by all that knew her. At her request no funeral services will be conducted.
