ORLAND – Charlotte (Applewhite) Pipher passed away Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006. She was born Jan. 9, 1922, one of three children in Athens, Ga., and resided in various states all over the country. She graduated from William Jewell with a master’s in English literature and in 1945, met and married Wesley V. Pipher and settled in White Plains, N.Y., where they raised four children. In 1991 they moved to Orland and opened The Sign of the Amiable Pig B & B, which they operated for 15 years. Charlotte was a constant figure at church wherever she lived, acting as business director, hostess or pushing brides down the aisle on their wedding day. She also presided as president of the PTA and vice president of the board of education in White Plains, N.Y. She was a tireless worker who loved flower arranging, cooking, baking and was always full of energy and the epitome of southern hospitality. Dinner parties and holidays were always festive occasions with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Wesley; brother, Winfield Applewhite of Mississippi; daughter, Martha and her husband, Tony, of New York; three sons, Calvin, Davis and his wife, Ingrid, of Maryland and Winfield of Bucksport; and three grandchildren, Virginia, Melissa and Grayson. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at the Orland United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery. There will be a gathering of conversation and refreshments in the parish hall immediately after the service. Arrangements by Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Busksport.
