PRESQUE ISLE – Clarence E. Paul, 99, died Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Leisure Village in Presque Isle. He was born July 22, 1904, at Springfield, Mass., the son of Winifred and Ella Paul. Mr. Paul’s family moved to Presque Isle, shortly thereafter. Mr. Paul was a 1922 graduate of Presque Isle High School, where he quarterbacked for the football team, was captain of the basketball team, and was a catcher on the baseball team. He married Gladys Lenore Paul of Mapleton and Presque Isle in Presque Isle in July 1926. First employed at Green’s Clothing in Presque Isle, Mr. Paul subsequently started to work for a short time at Presumpscot Paper Mill in Prescott, Me. Thereafter he moved back to Springfield, where he went to work repairing phonographs and other electronics. Later on he moved to the Boston area and worked for the Boston Edison Co. while pursuing certificates in electrical and mechanical engineering at Lowell Technical Institute, the night school division of MIT. Retiring from the Boston Edison Co. in 1959, he went into the consumer electronics repair business for himself until Mrs. Paul’s illness required his complete attention. He and Mrs. Paul moved to Leisure Village in June of 1996. Mrs. Paul died in January 2000. He is survived by his son, Richard K. Paul Sr. of Asheboro, N.C.; one grandson, Richard K. Paul Jr. of Thomasville, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Corbin J. Paul of Camden, Ark., Amanda D. and Teresa R. Paul of Thomasville, N.C.; a special friend, Henry Akeley of Presque Isle. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St., Presque Isle, with the Revs. Kevin Kierstead and James Ackerson officiating. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Johnson Cemetery in Presque Isle later this spring.
